Our team has extensive experience in treating various neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Ataxia, Stroke, Polio, Dystonia, and many others. We are a private company with some funded options – committed to keeping your needs at the centre of everything we do.

Why Neuro Physio?

Neurological Physio is a specific branch of physiotherapy in which our team have extra training and experience just working with people with neurological conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Changes to your neurological system can lead to muscle weakness, loss of function, altered sensation, decreased balance and uncoordinated movements.

Your Neuro Rehab physio will discuss the main impacts of your condition and assess how your different body systems are affected. They may look at adaptions to help you do the things you want and need to do better. They may also suggest  evidence-based techniques and exercises, to help improve neural pathways and facilitate new pathways through repetitive movements and exercises.

This is known as neuroplasticity, which is a core concept that can be used across many different neurological conditions.

Your treatment options will be discussed with you to ensure it is do-able for you and fits in with your goals.

Your physiotherapist may use a range of treatments such as:

• Specific exercises with you in our clinic room or specialised neurological gym
• Use of parallel bars, treadmill or other equipment
• Use of technology such as functional electrical stimulation
• Recommendation for specific orthotics
• Liaison with other health professionals such as occupational therapists or speech language therapists

How you can see a neurological physiotherapist

Most of our services are privately funded, but you may find your health insurance will cover some costs. Some people can have WINZ support to access a period of physiotherapy, and we also provide some funded options.

Specific funding

Cann Charitable Trust (previously the Duncan Foundation)  is a unique charity that will fund some neuro physio visits  for people who have…

• Been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the last year
• Had polio
• Cervical Dystonia
• Hereditary Ataxia

Mastering Mountains – a very special fund for those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Functional Neurological Disorder who have aspirations to get into the outdoors.

Visit time

Your first visit to our clinic will be up to 1.5 hours to allow time for an in-depth assessment and chance to talk with you about how we can help.

Following visits will be around 60 minutes.

Physiotherapy assistant

Once a programme is set up, you may have the option of a physiotherapy assistant to support you in on-going exercise. This is a more affordable option for ongoing support.

Home visits

If you are unable to travel into our clinic then in some instances a neurological physiotherapist can visit you in your own home or rest home/hospital. Extra charges apply.
