Neurological Physiotherapy

On the Go Physio has a specific neurological team, highly experienced in working with people with any neurological condition. Regardless of diagnosis every person is an individual with their own set of circumstances in terms of their family, their home, their occupation, their culture.

On the Go Physio will work with you to establish how your life is affected by your condition and what you would like to achieve, big or small. We can see you for a short burst of therapy to work on a specific area or be a regular, long term, part of your health team.

We also have an in-depth knowledge of local health and disability services and if you entitled to free treatment from another service we will advise on this.

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

It is a specific branch of physiotherapy that focuses on neurological conditions that affect the functioning of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, such as;

  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • MS
  • Ataxia
  • Dystonia
  • Post Polio Syndrome
  • Brain Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Degenerative Neurological conditions e.g. Peripheral Neuropathy, Charcot Marie Tooth.
  • Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

Regardless of your specific condition, damage to the nervous system means that messages from your brain are not reaching the affected parts of your body. This can result in muscle weakness, loss of function, altered sensation, decreased balance and uncoordinated movements.

How can a Neurological Physiotherapist help me?

Our neurological physiotherapy team at On The Go Physio will discuss the main impacts of your condition and assess how your different body systems are affected.

Using evidence-based techniques and exercises, they can help to improve the damaged message pathways and facilitate new pathways through repetitive movements and exercises.

This is known as neuroplasticity, which is a core concept that can be used across many different neurological conditions.

The treatment options will be discussed with you to ensure it is do-able for you and fits in with your goals.

Your physiotherapist may use a range of treatments such as:

  • Specific exercises with you in our clinic room or specialised neurological gym
  • Option to join specific neurological exercise classes
  • Use of parallel bars, treadmill or other equipment
  • Use of technology such as functional electrical stimulation, Able-X machine
  • Recommendation for specific orthotics
  • Liaison with other health professionals such as occupational therapists or speech language therapists
